Joe Kelly Sr. founded Kelly Roofing in 1972, working as both a roofer and a painter. When Collier County began requiring contractor licenses a few years later, he had to choose one trade. He chose roofing.
His son Ken grew up on those roofs. In 1993, weeks after Ken finished high school, Joe fell from a roof and shattered both wrists, an injury that kept him off work for years. Ken took over the company at seventeen. He still runs it. His own son has since joined, making Kelly a three-generation business, and the company marked fifty years in June 2022.
That is the company’s account of itself. What the public record independently shows is a firm that has pulled more roofing permits than any other contractor in Collier County: 1,285 since 2020, across 306 communities, roughly two of every five neighborhoods in the county. At Wiggins Preserve, they were called back seventeen times in five years.
A story is easy to tell. Fifty-four years of permits is harder to arrange.
